Lay your head on a pillow
Of feathery, consoling deceptions
How cozy to settle under covers
Where no-one sees you
Neither must you see yourself
Cloak your eyes beneath dark eyelids
Crafty scales under which to hide
What agony! To be exposed in nakedness
That you've purposed
To hide, within your heart
Such a shallow facade, layers peeling away
as antique paper, brittle with age
Slowly uncovering the decay beneath
As you desperately clasp on to the pieces
They crumble through your mortal fingers...now dust
Swept together carefully
To fill each shameful crevice
Step cautiously on tiptoe
That the dust fall not aside
Last chance to hide
As dread lingers over
A swift wind sweeps
Each speck of cover away
The breath of death has snuffed aside
Now a stripped heart, ravished...invaded
Now there's no escaping this revelation
With eyes aflame that pierce right through you
Down, dividing the bone and the marrow
Infested heart, decayed and rotten
Gnawed away from deep within
Doused in perfume to overwhelm the stench
As you decomposed...
...Now beyond a cure
All those years you've wasted
To suffocate the truth
But now the truth you see only
And it taunts you relentlessly
All is revealed...
...Nothing hidden
This Truth exists on His own
By Whom you were created
Remained a rock through the ages
As He held us liars in His heart
But you wouldn't see
Beyond yourself
You've ran swiftly to cling to the side
Of that rampant, wayward train of death
Eyes fixed on that one-way track to eternal death
As you're swept off by sugarplum lies
Where you are embraced and drawn
Cradled
In the arms of your fate
Fields of liberty, flowers of lust
Melt together as you fly by
Rolling clouds of anger, raining revenge
Electric sensations rip through the sky
But then you see Him again
And all time stands still
Just a flicker of a candle, you're instantly caught
To face Him and search His tender eyes
Where you are repelled by what you see
...the real you, and you quiver
One step, two, three...but how hard to turn your back
With those fiery eyes cutting into your heart
Yet so much harder to submit yourself
for just what you are
One gulp, and you swallow down conviction
Avoiding His gaze, you grow brave
Such courage to laugh and mock Him
What a fool! to linger by the wayside
This weak and crucified man
Has He not heard?
Does He not know?
But yet...
Why did you turn back again...
When no-one was looking?
Perhaps you knew,
After all
But you counted yourself unworthy
You straighten yourself in your seat
And tidy your composure
For you are too intelligent, after all
To believe in such things
Ah...the sweet savour of relativism
Where truth is what you make it
And here, you outrun your conscience
Four steps, five,six...and
There you remain...
The number of man
